Chattahoochee River Hike Series
Bowman’s Island Trail
July 18th
By Jim Norvill

We had a wonderful day for hiking and a great turnout. Fourteen hikers enjoyed the 4 mile hike and the picnic by the river.

Here are what some of the hikers had to say about the hike.

Jack Bacon….

I enjoyed the hike last Saturday. In just a short drive we were below the Lake Lanier power generator, tying our boots to take on the double loop trail. We meandered through the connecting trails and gullies observing deer, caught trout, and a few dogs. I remember watching the fishermen, the boatmen, and the tubers as we hiked  along the river-bank. I like the trail talk with the hikers new to the Walking Club hikes as well as the regulars getting excited over stories of more vast trekking experiences and hiking trips that many have to share or are currently planning. I hope that your recovery is rapid and comfortable following your operation tomorrow. I look forward to our next hike.....

Arlene Horesh….

More enjoyable than I could have imagined.  It was my first hike with the WCG and I was warmly welcomed.  Everyone was compatible and so friendly.  The view of the Chattahoochee River by Buford Dam was wonderful - water so clean, clear and pristine, people kayaking and tubing - I wanted to jump in.

Barbara Lang….

I thoroughly enjoyed the hike on Saturday, July 18.  The venue was great, weather cooperated, but it was the people attending who made it so enjoyable.

Julia Hornbeck….

The picnic ground and the area of the river where we hiked were just beautiful.  A longer hike along the river would have been very enjoyable if the terrain there had been more hospitable. Also, it was a very shady hike and thus a good choice for summertime.  After seeing the tubing there, I am fired up to do that.  My husband says that the water in that part of the river comes directly from behind the bottom of the dam and so is very cold, so a HOT summer day would be best for tubing.   The hike was a pretty good workout, and I was very ready for some food by the time we stopped.  An absolutely perfect, gorgeous day, weather-wise.  I enjoyed it and appreciated being the guest of the club

Andy Ward…..

Wandering through the less traveled trail next to the river was excellent.  Next time I think maybe I will pack a pair of gloves for the unexpected climb.

I purposefully left my hiking sticks in the car as I did not think we would be fording any streams or doing any steeps; so much for planning.
